The Holocaust
The Holocaust was the systematic persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime. The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were "racially superior" and that the Jews, deemed "inferior," were "unworthy of life." During the era of the Holocaust, the Nazis also targeted other groups because of their perceived "racial inferiority": Roma (Gypsies), the handicapped, and some of the Slavic peoples (Poles, Russians, and others). -
Invasion of Poland
September 1,1939 Gemany invaded Poland starrting World War 2, Britian and France declared war on Germany. Following Britian, Austailia, Canada, New Zeland, South Africa, and India also declared war on Germany. -
Success in the West
This ended when Germany invaded Denmark and Norway and the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France in May. Britain was threatened with an amphibious invasion, but the Luftwaffe failed to achieve air superiority during the Battle of Britain so the invasion was postponed indefinitely. -
North Africa
In june 1940, after the battle of france was all byt over, Italy joined Germany and dictator Benito Mussolini sent forces to the desert region in December and counterattacked. In January 1941, the Afrika Korps were sent to Libya to reinforce their Italian allies and a hard fought campaign ensued. -
D-Day
On D-Day, June 6, 1944 , General Dwight Eisenhower led U.S. and Allied troops in an invasion of Normandy, France. The armies fought their way through France and Belgium and into Germany while Russian troops fought from the east. On May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered.
