Hitler always intended to unite the country of his birth with the country he now led, but a union (Anschluss) between the two countries had been forbidden by the 1919 peace settlement. In March, Schuschnigg visited Hitler at his home near the Austrian border. Hitler used the meeting to threaten and pressure the Austrian leader.
