  • Charter of 1732

    Charter of 1732
    James Ogelthorpe decided to draft a charter that would allow him to create a new colony for the debtors. It would be named Georgia after King George the second.

    Georgia Day
    Ogelthorpe brought settlers to future Savannah as the first colonists for the new colony.

    This was the first year that slavery was legalized in Georgia.
  • First Royal Governor

    First Royal Governor
    John Reynolds was the first royal governor for the new colony. He served for three years and didn't make a very good impression. He was ill tempered and spiteful and never took the greater good of the colony into consideration.

    The French and Indian War was a war between the French colonists and Indians and the British supporting Indians. It caused much devastation and great debt for the colonies. The british won the war. It ended in 1763.
  • Second Royal Governor

    The second royal governor was Henry Ellis he also ruled for three years. He was much more likeable than John Reynolds, but had to leave when he fell ill.
  • Parishes

    The colony of Georgia was divided into eight separate parishes by the governor at the time Henry Ellis. This was a major improvement to the colony considering that each parish could be ruled by a different set of people making the whole an easier task to manage.
  • Third Royal Governor

    James Wright was the third royal governor. He ruled for the longest period of time almost sixteen years. He was a very desireable governor considering he expanded Georgia's borders greatly after the war, and he always had a positive disposition.

    This document created a line along the crest of the Appalachian Mountains and forbade any settlers West of the line.
  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    As a result of the French and Indian War the colonists were in great debt. To pay for this debt the British started to tax the colonists. The first tax was set on sugar.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The sugar act was a personal fail for the British, therefore we needed a new alternative to redeem us from our debt. We sought out and started the stamp act, a tax on anything printed on paper.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    After the stamp act backfiredthe British started the townshend act, which taxed the most important items to the colonists: tea, glass, paper, and paint.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    A misunderstanding between British soldiers and the colonists that sent five of the latter to their unfortunate demise. This event as well as many others played a major part in the Revolution and the establishment of the U.S.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    The colonists were infuriated with the fact that they were being taxed and still weren't allowed to participate in the government. Due to this the colonists rebelled by throwing all of the freshly imported tea into Boston Harbor.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    Every colony except Georgia attended. They met to discuss rebellion and how we could manage it.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    As a result of the Boston Tea Party the Intolerable Acts were passed. These acts forbade town meetings, allowed quartering acts, closed Boston Harbor, and tried British soldiers for a court of law in Great Britain.
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    Georgia actually participated in this Continental Congress, pooling together with every other colony to discuss independance. We sent three representatives: George Walton, Button Gwinnett, and Lyman Hall.
  • Revolutionary War

    This was the point in the revolution that Georgia experienced the war and fighting started in the colony. The war ended in 1783 for the Georgia residents.

    The Declaration of Independance was a document that stated how the colonies were seperate from the British as an independant nation and it was signed by three Georgians.
  • Yazoo Land Fraud

    Yazoo Land Fraud
    A major scandal where G.A. Governor Matthews and the General Assembly members offered $500,000 for 35-50 acres of land. (Thats approximately 1.5 cents per acre) The fraud was quickly discovered and voided.

    Invented by Eli Whitney, the cotton gin was a machine that seperated the cotton seeds from the cotton fibersmaking a long and tedious process by hand a swift and simple maneuver. It also made cotton far more profitable and affordable.

    White males, widows, and bachelors could buy a "chance" at land lots of varying sizes for settlement.
  • Dahlonega Gold Rush

    1st gold mining center in the U.S. It started many disputes over the Cherokee land and led to the Trail of Tears.
  • Worchester v.s Georgia

    Worchester v.s Georgia
    A major legal battle regarding the court case that would determine the fate of the Cherokee Indians and the Indian Removal Act. The ruling in the case was ignored by the president at the time Andrew Jackson, he sent the Indians away even when it was ruled unjust.

    A major improvement in transportation that allowed us to transport larger amounts of freight and people faster. Made transport to the West possible.
