Hernando de Soto
An eplorer from Spain and the first to explore what is now the southeastern US, including Georgia in 1539.
Went on a mission for the three G's: God, Glory, and gold.
He used the Mississippian inidans and thier culture during his voyage to find gold.
De Soto and his men unknowingly spread disease to the indians, killing them by thousands.
De Soto died in 1549 on his voyage, but his men covered it up and kept going so that the indians can believe in a god. -

France
France began to explore Georgia after the failure of the Spaonish Missions.
Main intrest of france was in the fur trade. They got the fur from beavers, deer, and other small mammals.
Many protestants from France came to Georgia and South Carolina.
France was never able to establish a permanent colony in Georgia. -

Spanish Missions
Spian did successfully established missions form 1568-1684.
Missions were Catholic churches that were set up to convert the native Americans to Christianity so they could become part of the Spanish economy as well.
Missions in the Okefenokee swamp region snd southern Georgia, but most sucessful were on the Barrier islands. -
James Oglethorpe & trustees
England gave James Oglethorpe and 20 other trustees permission to establish Georgia as a colony in 1733.
Oglethorpe became leader amongst the trustees becauses he befriended Native Americans like tomochichi and Mary Musgrove. He also allowed Jews, Scottish and German immigrants to settle in Georgia.
Oglethorpe left Georgia in 1743 never to return, but he lived long enough to see the colony he helped create break away from England in 1785 -
Colony of Georgia
Charity- Georgia was a colonyb for " worthy poor:. This meant that since England gave these poor citizens land in the colony, they couold not drink (hard liduor) or own slaves.
Economy-because of English mecantilism colonist were forced to leave crops like tobacco and mulberry tress fro silk worms to feed on.
Defense- Georgia was very successful at repelling Spanish attacks from Flordia. Despite many attempts at destorying the colony, Spain was never successful. -
Maloconents
colonists that paid their own way into Georgia and were unhappy with the laws banning slavery and liquor placed by the trustees and Oglethorpe. Because of the Malcontents' complaints, the ban on slavery and liquor was lifted, forever changing Georgia history. -

First citizens in Georgia. Couldnt drink hard liquor or own slaves. -
England
England had begun setting up many successful colonies in North America like Virgina, Maryland, and North Carolina. Georgia was England's last of its 13 colonies created in 1733.
Goal of Englad was mercantilism. This is when a century wants to make money by ecporting more goods than it
imports.
England was able to this by controlling colonies, like Georgia, all over the world. -
Savannah
Sannah was used as a port of trade and served as the capital of Georgia, -
Highland Scots
A group of fiece Scottish warriors brought a Georgia by Oglethorpe for their fighting abilities. They successfully defended Georgia in battles like the Battle of the Bloody Marsh and the Battle for Jenkins' Ear. They were also anit-slavery. -
Mary Musgrove
the daughter of a yamacraw woman and an English fur trader, Musgrove became fluent in both languages and helped translate for Oglethorpe and Tomochichi. -
Salzburgers
German protestants that came to Georgia to escape persecution. They were very successful. They were the first to build an orphanage, were openly against slavery, built the first Sunday school, and were the only group to have successful silk farms. -
Henry Ellis
very successful governor. Divided Georgia into 8 parishes (counties) . Made a deal with Spain to move GA's territory to the St. Mary's River . Hated the Georgia heat, commonly walked the streets of Savannah with a thermometer around his neck claiming "GA is one of the hottest places of Earth"! -

Georgia's first governor. Ushered in the court systems and public assembly. Wasn't stupid leader and was quickly recalled. -
Mississippian Indians

Most advanced native civilization.
They were the first natives to meet the Europeans. Unfortunately, shortly after this most of them died from battle, starvation or diseases like small pox from the Europeans.
