    in the 1940's he became the president of Morhouse College. He closely worked along MLK's side for desegregation and equlity for all.

    The End to White Primary
    This time in history, was when the County Unit System was being changed. After this change it enabled more black legislators to have a say in the government and ended white primary.
  • GA State Flag

    GA State Flag
    Adding the Confederate battle flag to the new Georgia flag was a strong reaction about Brown vs. Board of Education.
  • Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee

    Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
    The SNCC field secretaries helped influence the start of the Albany Movement. SHortly after Atl. was chosen as the headquarters there was protesting (sit ins) a sifferent department stores around Georgia. Many were arrested including MLK in these events. After Atl. gained 21 seats in the legislature we gained 10 new black legislators. The Atlanta Project was when the black communities wanted to have more say in decisions that effected their lives.
  • Sibley Commission

    Sibley Commission
    This event in time was brought forth because of the Brown vs. Board of Education. Sibley (president of UGA) was chosen as a representative to handle htis situation because he is against segregation. Although he strived to desegregate wo more votes were toward segregating the public school system. Not listening to the votes, Sibley didnt give up and because of Hamilton and Charlayne at UGA crisis he seceded and the public schools officially became desegregated.
  • The Albany Movement

    The Albany Movement
    The Albany Movement held mass meetings, protested often, and many went to jail for there belief in human equality. At the end of the first month over 500 demonstrators had been put behind bars, therefore they decided to call in MLK to keep the movement alive. Although the movement failed, many people apart of it said it didn't. They said that even though it didnt put a stop to it, it got us one step closer.
  • March on Washington

    March on Washington
    On this day in history, over 200,000 Americans gathered in our nations capitol for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. This event took place to emphasize the social and political changes in the black community. Civil rights groups along with many religious groups organized this event. At this event, Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous, "I Have a Dream" speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
  • The Civil Rights Act

    The Civil Rights Act
    The Civil Rights Act banned all segregation in public places, job discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national orgin.
  • Lester Maddox

    Lester Maddox
    He was a popular governor to Georgia's citizens. He approved the first black officer into the Georgia State Patrol. Although he didn't finish high school he made generous donations during the process of building UGA.
  • Maynard Jackson

    Maynard Jackson
    Maynard Jackson was the first black Mayor of Atlanta. He is known for creating wealth, success, and better education fo African Americans in Atlanta.
