Genie: Life as an Experiment and Victim

  • Genie is doing better

    Genie is now living in a small, private location in LA where she is happy. Her mother visits her regularly, until she passed away, and the Riglers have meet her once or twice. Genie is going well and she is in state care and she still communicates fairly well using sign language. She is still alive today

  • Genie was Found

    A social worker found Genie on this day. The social worker had found out that Genie only lived in a small little room tied to a potty chair most of the time. Genie was 13 years old when she was found.
  • Genie was taken to Children's Hospital Los Angeles

    Genie was immediately taken to this hospital because she was in a really bad state. There she would come in contact with many people some of which would take advantage of her for their own personal gain.
  • The media finds out about Genie

    News about Genie and her case had gotten out and her story was getting national attention.
  • Genie's father commits suicide

    Genie's father could not take all the attention from the news outlets and maybe he was afraid of what would come from the court hearing so he committed suicide. He killed himself by gunshot
  • The court hearing for genie's mother

    The verdict of the hearing was that charges on her mother were dropped. She claimed that her husband was abusive to her and Genie and due to her almost total blindness, she could not protect her children.
  • Genie starts to show physical improvments

    Genie began growing and putting on weight. She also learning and making small relations with the people around her. She also became confident in her movements and she was gain hand-eye coordination.
  • Genie is now a case

    Genie became a case study and various psychologist, linguists and many other people were studying Genie and were completing tests on her. Grants were given to help the research move ahead quickly.
  • Genie makes some improvements in her vocabulary

    Genie showed understanding of only her own name and some of the names of a few other people. Most of her vocabulary consisted of two "stop it" and "no more".
  • Genie gains and interest in speech

    Genie was very interested in the people talking around her and she was interested in their speech. She tried to mimic the speech sound the people made.
  • Genie's test scores improve

    Before Genie scores showed that she was thinking as a 1-2 year old would. Now her scores showed that she was thinking like a 4 year and 9 mouth old.
  • Genie showed comfort with a friend

    There was a small earthquake in LA at this time and Genie had gotten scared. She quickly ran to the side of one of the cooks that she had befriended. This was the first time that she had gone to a person to be comforted and the first time that she had been so readily verbal this quickly.
  • Foster homes

    Genie was going to live in her first foster home. She first lived with Jean Butler who got Genie there after saying that she had gotten some sickness that she had given to Genie. Instead of putting her in quarantine in the hospital they put her in temporary quarantine at Butler's house.
  • Second Foster Home

    Butler's application to be Genie's permanent foster parent was denied and the Riglers took her in as her new foster parents. The Riglers had studied and worked with Genie before.
  • Genie responds to stories

    Marilyn Rigler was reading Genie a story and before she didn't respond, but now she was responding and paying attention. After she was now more sociable in her interactions with people and became somewhat more responsive.
  • Genie can identify

    Genie was beginning to identify objects that were shown to her or she could at least show some understand of the shown object.
  • Genie was given up by her mother

    Genie's mother had found it hard to take care of Genie so a few mother after she was taken in by her mother, she was put back in the foster system. She was then juggled between many foster homes. At one home, she was beaten and then her mental state went down. She became afraid of eating and speaking.
  • Genie believes her situation of foster homes is her fault

    Genie thought that the reason she was juggled between multiple foster homes was because she was going something wrong. This mentality didn't help her mental state.
  • Genie is not doing well

    Genie was moved through foster homes and institutions over and over again. This was causing her to be depressed and overwhelmed.
