Julia Roberts Role Throughout Movies
Movies, especially romantic movies, have changed dramatically throughout time. How women have portrayed in films is not always in the greatest of ways. Julia Roberts is a great example of a woman who has played roles where she is a prostitute but has also played roles where she is the main character and calling all the shots. -
Mystic Pizza
Mystic Pizza is one of the first-ever movies Julia Robert starred in. She plays a young girl, Daisy Araujo, just out of high school wanting to get out of her small town and chase her dreams and find love. Mystic Pizza is a great movie that showcases three young girls trying to navigate their lives. But, the main focus is not what job they are all planning on getting, it is about what man they are focusing on. -
Pretty Woman
This movie is about a rich, New York man, Edward, who pays a young, pretty prostitute, Vivian, to accompany him. But, he starts to really enjoy her company, especially after opening up to him. This movie shows the most used and basic portrayal of a man and woman, how an emotional, young, weak woman falls for a rich businessman. Although he was falling for her as well, Vivian in this movie was the one of the lower class, while Edward, the man was the classier one. -
My Best Friend's Wedding
In this movie, Julia Roberts plays a woman, Julianne Potter, who has a packed with her childhood best friend, Michael to marry each other if they were still single by 28. When Michael announces he's getting married she realizes that she's in love with him. She tries to stop the wedding, but, unfortunately, it doesn’t work out. This movie portrays Julianne as a woman who is chasing a man. This is another example where movies portray women chasing the man instead of the other way around. -
Runaway Bride
This movie is about a woman, Maggie Carpenter, who is branded as “the runaway bride.” She has already left three men at the altar, and Ike Graham, who is a city journalist is convinced she’ll do it again. Little does he know he will end up falling in love with this runaway bride. This is an amazing movie, but at the beginning of the movie Julia Roberts plays a woman who can never commit, and is always on the run. This is another example of how women were portrayed during this time. -
Mother's Day
Roberts plays a woman, Miranda, who is too career obsessed to worry about having children or trying to find love. A lot of people may think that she should be focused on having children and starting a family, but she wants to focus on her career. If a man was in this position no one would think twice about it. Times have changed and movies are changing as well. Julia Roberts has played in a variety of movies and I believe this was a perfect movie for her.
