Janie's first kiss
Janie kisses Johnny Taylor. Nanny believes it is time for her to get married and be protected after this event. Janie's grandmother was worried Janie would not be able to fend for herself once she dies, so she wants her to marry a strong, reliable man. It was very uncommon for women to live by themselves and have a job. Men were responsible for putting money on the table. "Ah can't be always guidin' yo' feet from harm and danger. Ah wants to see you marries right away," (13). -
Janie gets divorced
Janie and Logan get into a divorce. The divorce must happen because Janie is looking for love in a relationship but all she gets from Logan is protection. In their relationship Logan only lets Janie do certain things while he takes care of the more manly duties. "Ah'd rather be shot wid tacks than tuh turn over in de bed and stir up de air whilst he is in dere. He don't even never mention nothin' pretty," (24). -
Janie's marriage with Logan Killicks
The Nanny wanted Janie to be married, and so it happened. Janie wedded Logan Killiks, even though she felt nothing for him. During this era, husbands were obligated to protect their wives, even if they didn't want that much protection. Janie felt this with Logan and eventually decided that she wanted to find true love, instead of staying in an arranged marriage. This is evident when Janie says "Ah wants to want him sometimes. Ah don't want him to do all de wanting," (23). -
Janie runs away with Joe
Janie leaves Logan to be with Joe. Joe takes her to a Black only town called Eatonville. Immediately Joe gets to work on establishing a more functional society, mainly by opening a store. As time goes on Joe's charming nature toward Janie develops into a strict leash he has on her. He is constantly criticizing her, belittling her in front of others, and abusing her physically upon error. "So they were married there before sundown, just like Joe had said. With new clothes of silk and wool," (33). -
Janie and Jody fight
A customer enters the store and asks for tobacco, Janie tries to cut it, however, she makes a mistake and cuts it unevenly. Jody has a fit and degrades her in front of the customer saying she has no right to be cutting the tobacco. Janie explodes on Jody and insults his weight and appearance." Uh woman and uh knife- no kind uh knife, don't b'long tuhgether," (78). -
