Events Leading to, During, and After the Vietnam War

  • Democratic State Declared

    Democratic State Declared
    Viet Minh forces had taken control of the city of Hanoi. With Ho Chi Minh as president they declared a Democratic State/Republic of Vietnam. US Government didn't stand in the way at the time. This began the divide of the communist North and the democratic South.

    US Aids the French.

    The French figure out a way to secure the US in aiding them for future protection, aka the Vietnam War. They continue to aid.
  • French Lost

    French Lost
    Fench lost their final land, Dien Bien Phu on May 7th. At this time the US was bankrolling 75% of French War effort. This major loss was one of the causes leading to the Vietnam War. This increased the involvement and presence by the US.
  • French Surrender and Vietnam Divides in Two

    French Surrender and Vietnam Divides in Two
    French finally surrender. Vietnam divides itself into North and South at the seventeenth parallel. South did not sign but promised to stick to the agreement that was made. The agreement was for North and South to be seperate until elections could be held to unite the country as one.
    This furthered the tension between the two sides.
  • US Increases Advisors

    US Increases Advisors
    The number of US advisors had increased tremendiously from 327 to 625. As Kennedy was becoming president they began to increase the troops and advisors in Vietnam.
  • South Coup Fails

    South Coup Fails
    Ngo Dinh Diem gains victory over a coup that was attempted by the Army of the Repubic of Vietnam (ARVN). This army was also known as the Southern government forces.
  • National Liberation Front (NLF)

    National Liberation Front (NLF)
    The NLF, also known as the Viet Cong, was established. The Viet Cong was an organization/army that fought the United States and South Vietnamese governments.
  • 2nd Gulf of Tonkin Attack

    2nd Gulf of Tonkin Attack
    A second USS destroyer was sitting in international waters and an attempt of attack occured again by North Vietnam but the evidence has remained inclusive. The US then bombs Vietnam for the first time.
  • USS Maddox Attacked

    USS Maddox Attacked
    North Vietnamese laid their first attack of the Gulf of Tokin incident on USS Maddox by 3 torpedo boats.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    After the two attacts from North Vietnam, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was established confirming the approval of the expansion of war.

    Operation Rolling Thunder

    A sustained US ariel bombing campaign took place against the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
  • US Troops Arrive

    US Troops Arrive
    The first US troops arrive on March 8th in Vietnam as well as 3500 marines landing on China Beach.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    North Vietnam joins Viet Cong and attacks around 100 South Vietnam Cities. This was known as the Tet Offensive. Although this offense had a huge impact on US public support and weakened support for Johnson Administration, the US and South Vietnam gained back their lost territory and almost got rid of NLF entirely.
  • Paris Peace Accords

    Paris Peace Accords
    The Paris Peace Accords was signed on Jan. 27th. This agreement contained a cease-fire and US had to withraw all troops and advisorts. The US also had to get rid off all bases within the next 2 months. If they did so, the North would release all prisoners.
  • US Troops Withdrawn

    US Troops Withdrawn
    Not only were the last of the US troops in Vietnam finally withdrawn, but the last prisoners that Vietnam had held captive were also released after the Paris Peace Accord. This day long lives the quote of President Nixon "the day we have all worked and prayed for has finally come".
  • South Vietnam Surrenders

    South Vietnam Surrenders
    South Vietnam's capital, Saigon, was captured and South Vietnam officially surrendered to the communists. They fought until they ran out of all weapons and air support. This was the initial ending point of the Vietnam War.
  • Dedication

    Dedication
    After the war had finally come to an end, a Viatnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in honor of the Vietnam war in Washington DC. This memorial honors all those who served with each of their names ingraved on this wall. To this day this momument is known as The Wall That Heals and those who served will never be forgotton.
