    Ulrichs is thought to have been the first gay person to publicly speak out for homosexual rights. In 1867, he urged the German government to repeal anti-homosexuality laws, which firmly established himself as the pioneer of the gay rights movement.

  • Roberta Cowell is the first known British trans woman to undergo reassignment surgery

    Roberta Cowell is the first known British trans woman to undergo reassignment surgery
    Roberta was a racing driver and World War II fighter pilot. She underwent a secret procedure in order to get a certificate stating that she was intersex. This enabled her to undergo surgery and get a new birth certificate. She claimed that being intersex was what ‘justified’ her transition and focused specifically on chromosomes and genetics, an approach which was very much 'of its time' compared to the modern-day discourse around trans and gender identities. Definitely a key in lgbtq history.

    Stonewall Riots - June 28, 1969 when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn(a gay club).
    This raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police moved employees and patrons out of the bar, then 6 days of protests and violent actions with law enforcement outside the bar. The Stonewall Riots served as motivation for the gay rights movement around the world, they wanted civil rights and to be treated as human beings. Gays have been fighting before and since then. This has been known as a key event in Gay history.

    GLF held the UK's first-ever "Gay Pride" march. Their goal was to show that gays were proud, not ashamed. Determined to come out of the shadows and stand up for our rights, Gays wanted to make themselves visible and demand LGBT liberation and rights they have always been fighting for. Sadly only 700 people turned up.

    In the 1970-80s gay political organizations grew, mostly in the United States and Europe, and spread to other parts in the world, though their relative size, strength, and toleration by authorities which varied significantly. The transnational International Lesbian and Gay Association was founded in Coventry, England, in 1978. Now headquartered in Brussels, it plays a important role in coordinating world efforts to promote human rights and fight discrimination against the lgbtq community.

    Terry's partner Rupert Whittaker, Martyn Butler and friends set up the Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK’s first AIDS charity. A year later, the government banned men who have sex with men from donating blood due to the AIDS crisis.
