Gatling Gun Invention
The invention was made because Richard Gatling had the intention of making a weapon that did the work of 100 soldiers with only a couple controlling it. This was also meant to decrease deaths as well as the number of soldiers on the battlefield. -
Sir Hiram Maxim creates the Maxim Gun.
The Maxim Gun was an innovation of its predecessor, the Gatling Gun. It was a fully-automatic edition of the Gatling Gun that didn't need to be cranked for it to fire. The energy made from the combustion of the shot moved the bullet belt, meaning that the gun shot repeatedly without issue until you run out of ammo. -
Invention of the Vickers Machine Gun
The Vickers Gun was a lighter, faster version of the Maxim Gun. Consequently, it usually took six men to carry/operate the weapon. Even so, it was very powerful. -
Gatling Gun Design Change
Troop transporter helicopters were very vulnerable and often shot down by the enemy in the Vietnam War. Thus, the military wanted to change that. Here comes the minigun, a fully electric Gatling gun, that fired up to 6000 rounds a minute. -
US Air Force equips A-10 Warthog with Vulcan Cannon
The Air Force wanted to create a weapon powerful enough to conquer the skies. This led to the Vulcan Cannon being added to the A-10. The Vulcan Cannon was a Gatling Gun larger than a car, and so massive, that the entire plane had to be built around it. -
The Modern Minigun
The newest Gatling Guns are better known as miniguns. It is used in almost every branch of the Armed Forces. Our Air Force uses it to dominate the skies and the Army and Marines use it for ground advantage. It is one of the most commonly used, yet most powerful weapons invented. -
