    All 11 states that had passed the Constitution sent people to choose the first president. It was a unanimous vote for Washington and John Adams was elected the Vice President. This was also the first use of the electoral college

    Americans saw him as an honest leader and hero. Washington appointed Alexander Hamilton as secretary of the treasury and Thomas Jefferson as secretary of state.

    Martha Washington had a very busy life in the white house, she entertained guests and went to social events with her husband. Many other women thought that they should play a greater role in the development of the US.

    In 1796 Washington decided not to run for a 3rd term. In his farewell speech he states that the greatest dangers to the American republic are foreign ties and political conflict at home.

    In 1796 John Adams was elected as our 2nd president. At first glance he didn't appear ready for presidency and some people said he lacked Washington's dignity. Some even said he was a cold and distant person.

    These were said to protect the US but federalists hoped they would crush opposition to war. The Sedation Act stated that it was forbidden to publish or voice criticism about the federal government.
