    Fulgencio Batista was born on born January 16, 1901 in Banes, Cuba. His parents were Belisario Batista Palermo (Father) and Carmela Zaldívar González. (Mother) His real name was Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar.

    He was an army officer and president of the Cuban army. He entered in 1921. He started as a stenographer. Then Batista rose to the rank of sergeant and developed a large personal following.

    He got married in 1926 to Elisa Godinez Gomez they divorced in 1946. Then he was married AGAIN in 1946 to Marta Fernandez Miranda. He had 8 children total.     On July 26th, 1953, a small group opposed to Batista attacked a barrack’s in Santiago. The attack, led by Fidel Castro. In the event, 59 people were shot and 19 soldiers had been killed, the final total could have reached 190.

    From December 1956, Batista faced a growing challenge from a movement led by Fidel Castro. Student demonstrations in Havana were brutally dealt with by police and student leaders were murdered by men who were outside of the law.However, Batista did face one huge problem. The number of poor Cubans who had not benefited from the vast sums of money that had been invested and spent in Cuba.

    Fulgencio Batista died in 1973. He sadly died from a heart attack. He was 72. He was buried on August 8, 1973 at Cemetery of San Isidro, Madrid, Spain
