People began to gather weapons to defend the city, so on July 14, a mob searching for gunpowder and arms stormed the Bastille, a prison in Paris. The mob overwhelmed the guard and seized control of the building.

Rebellion began to spread from Paris to the countryside. From village to village, rumors spread that nobles were hiring outlaws to terrorize the peasants, then the senseless panic known as the Great Fear rolled through France. Peasants then armed themselves with pitchforks and other farm tools and broke into the nobles' manor houses and destroyed the old legal papers that bound them to pay feudal dues.

When Robespierre came to power, he became practically a dictator, when he believed there were so many "enemies" to the revolution, he executed over 40,000 innocents. The Convention calls for his arrest, and then he was tried and executed.
