French Revolution

  • Period: to

    French Revolution

  • Estates General Called

Since the King was never supposed to be King, he made quite poor decisions, and didn't properly run the country. The King then called an Estates General Meeting, and the King had asked them what he should do next. There they did an old government organization at Versailles. At this 'meeting' they had to do some votes, now only one vote PER estate was allowed.
  • Estates General Called

Now there was only one vote PER estate was allowed. There were three estates: 1st Estate- Clergy (Church), 2nd Estate- Nobility, 3rd Estate- Poor and farmers. 1st and 2nd Estate- voted against any changes because they disliked the poor and wanted to keep it the same way. Now the King wanted more tax revenue, and taxed the poor people for everything, and doubled the price for everything as well. The 3rd estate wanted change but they were way over powered by the two estates.
  • National Assembly Formed

The 3rd Estate was not very happy with the voting system and think that it was unfair, and how they should all individually get a vote. So they all came together and formed what they called a "National Assembly",
  • Tennis Court Oath

The Tennis Court Oath had also lead to the formation of the National Assembly. The 3rd Estate had agreed to meet up everyday at the same tennis court and at the same time. They kept meeting because they wanted economic reform and equality, the King had eventually gave in. This is really important because if they never had this "Tennis Court Oath" they would've never had a change.
  • The Storming of the Bastille

Fall of Bastille in Paris, after the Tennis Court Oath happened the 3rd Estate had raided the Bastille for weapons. They also stormed the Bastille because the 3rd Estate hated the King and Queen. This was the spark of the revolution and was a major event. This is important because the prison symbolizes the Kings power and the 3rd Estate stormed it because they wanted to get what they wanted.
  • Women's March on Versailles

It's important because the women had brought the King back to Paris so he could see what Paris was going through. It also represents that change is slowly forming because the 3rd Estates voice is finally being heard.
  • Women's March on Versailles

Since France was in an economic crisis, the 3rd Estate wasn't able to buy enough bread to keep them alive, because the 3rd Estate was taxed so much. Soon a bunch of angry women walked from Paris to Versailles and on the way many more women joined in. Over ten-thousand women had marched over to Versailles, Marie Antoinette the Queen didn't care and said "Let them eat cake." Some women had broken into the Palace and put the guards head on pikes.
  • Constitutional Monarchy Formed

After the Women's March on Versailles, a couple years later the government structure changes multiple times moving power more away from the King. The King agreed to go from an Absolute Monarch to a Constitutional Monarch and shares his power with the revolutionary government (Nation Assembly). This is important because the National Assembly had a lot of members from the 3rd Estate, and the King is sharing his power with them which means the 3rd Estate doesn't have to suffer as bad.
  • Mob Overthrows the Constitutional Monarchy

People from Paris had imprisoned the King, demanded the overthrow of the monarchy and the start of the France Republic. The mob played a huge role in the decision making and who was going to lead the country next. The King was imprisoned because after France had declared war on Austria it went terrible and Louis XVI was blatantly accused of treason in September of 1792. This soon led to King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette to get beheaded.
  • King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette Beheaded

Four years after the French Revolution began Marie Antoinette was no longer Queen of France, and King Louis had been beheaded for crimes against France. And on January 21 1793 King louis had been executed, Marie had also been issued the death penalty on October 16 1793. This was a major event that happened during the French revolution because after King Louis died the Ancien Regime was no longer in play, meaning there was no 3rd class, 2nd class, etc.
  • Reign of Terror Begins

The Reign of Terror was a mass massacre and numerous public executions. This happened because it was a response to Revolutionary Fervour and accusations of treason (betraying another country). The people living in France at the time had to be very careful about what they said to other people around them. If people in France disagreed they would be sent to get beheaded, you could've gotten beheaded for even being accused of treason as well.
  • Reign of Terror Ends

The Reign of Terror ends with Maximilien Robespierre was finally executed ending the Reign of Terror. This also resulted in the French Revolution ending and France going back to somewhat "normal." Charles X soon took over the throne of France.
