Estates General
Forced King Louis XVI to call the Estates General. They have not been called since 1614 - 175 years ago. Many people see this as the Aristocratic Revolution which was the first stage of the Revolution. -

National Assembly
May 1789 Estates General is called to meet in Versailles and argued over voting for about six weeks. This results in the third estate declaring themselves as the National Assembly and they would draft a constitution. -
Bastille Day
on July 14, 1789, 900 people of Paris stormed the Bastille which was an old fortress used as a prison and armory. It it like our Independence Day. -
Great Fear
Rebellion broke out everywhere in France to help the Assembly. Rural peasant were less concerned about food and grew their own or political power. -
August Decrees
National Assembly abolishes classes or estate system and creat the Declaration of rights of Man. -
Women March to Versailles
There was no bread in the markets so on October 5 6,000 - 7,000 women and revolutionaries marketed to Versailles. Small group broke into the palace by beating and killing the guards. They were stopped by Marcus de Lafayette and they had the king and queen arrested. -
Constitution of 1791
The Constitution of 1791 creates a weaker monarchy. This stated that there was still a king but Legislative Assembly would make laws. This created Passive and Active citizens. Also there were three political groups the Jacobins/Girondins, Constitutional Monarchies, and Royalist. -

Austrian threatened France and France declared war on Austria. The goal for the French was to unite the people. but, France loses over and over again. This created more fear and separation -
The Rise of the Sons - Culottes
Their name means without knee-britches and they represent the working class. In 1792 they attack the palace, take the king, and disband the Legislative Assembly. -
September Massacre
Fear and panic spread in Paris. Violence erupted leaving thousands dead which is know as the September Massacre. -
French Republic Begins
The National Convention was called to draft a new constitution. They ran the country and soon abolished the monarchy and sets up the French Republic. -
The Death of the King
King Louis XVI got beheaded with the Guillotine which was new device that was quick, efficient, and shows anyone could die like royalty. -
Committee of Public Safety - Robespierre
The Committee of Public Safety gains broad powers in response to external and internal issues. This leads to the rise of a new figure named Maximilian Robespierre. -
Reign of Terror - death of JPM - total deaths/Guillotine
The Reign of Terror led by Jacobins lead by Robespierre with support of the Sans Culotte. They wanted to crush opposition to the Revolution.Jean Paul Marat executed in bathtub. 40,000 were killed either by guillotine or execution. -

Thermidorian Reaction - End of Robespierre
the parliamentary revolt initiated on 9 Thermidor, which resulted in the fall of Maximilien Robespierre and the collapse of revolutionary fervour and the Reign of Terror in France. -
1 million soldiers
The committee issued decree to raise an army. By September 1794, France had over 1 million people in the France Army. This was the biggest army Europe had seen. -
Constitution of Year III
French constitution established during the Thermidorian Reaction in the French Revolution. Known as the Constitution of Year III in the French republican calendar, it was prepared by the Thermidorian Convention. -

Council of elders chose 5 people from a list presented by Council of 500. Lasted from 1795-1799 and corrupt the Bourgeoisie. -
