During this timespan, Napoleon took charge. He first took power by taking the crown from the pope and crowning himself King. The industry began to build new roads, bridges, and canals. He backed some of the social reforms down and made amends with the Catholic Church.

Forces sent to Spain were without enough supplies. Devoted to their king, the Spaniards kept invaders out. Soon, French forces would soon be getting hit by guerrilla warfare that kept French tied down when Napoleon needed them.

In 1812 about 600,000 soldiers and 50,000 horses, Napoleon invaded Russia. To avoid battles with Napoleon the Russians retreated eastward, burning crops and villages as they went. This scorched-earth policy left the French hungry and cold as winter came.
