General term applied to the work of many artists and designers in the 1800's and 1900's. It was originally the name of a Paris gallery but then the term was soon applied to any work that seemed to reject historical reference in favor of a "new sensibility" -
Émile Gallé
A French artist that worked in glass. His early work was executed using clear glass decorated with enamel, but he soon turned to an original style featuring heavy, opaque glass carving called cameo glass (luxury glass). -
Rene Lalique
Jewelry designer. Recognized as one France's foremost Art Nouveau jewelry designers and became noted for the work he did in the "art deco" style. (Art deco is an eclectic artistic and design style that began in Paris in the 1920s) -
Aubrey Beardsley
Aubrey Beardsley was an English illustrator and author. His drawings were usually done in black ink and influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts. Beardsley was an extremely controversial artist of the Art Nouveau era, known for his dark and perverse images. -
Alphonse Mucha
Mucha designed a lithographic poster for the "Gismonda" play which attracted much attention to his line of work. -

Designed the Castel Beranger (gateway) which made him famous and gave him many commissions.
