  • Fort Duquesne

    Fort Duquesne
    In the early 1750s, French soldiers captured many English trading posts. After capturing the posts they built Fort Duquesne. Fort Duquesne was to help defend their territory from English incursions. Fort Duquesne is what now is called Pittsburgh.
  • George Washington Creating Ft. Necessity

    George Washington Creating Ft. Necessity
    In 1754, George Washington and a team of men went to the Ohio Country to drive out the French. When a group of French were discovered in that area Washington's group attacked. Washington was out numbered and was forced to retreat. He quickly retreated and built Ft. Necessity. Ft. Necessity was in a poor location. On July 3, 1754 French soldiers and their allies overwhelmed the area starting the "French and Indian War".

    After a year and a half the French declared war on the English. For the first three years of the war the French outnumbered and dominated the battlefield. Soundly defeating the English in battles at Fort Oswego and Ticonderoga.

    William Pitt became the foreign minister. William was better at understanding the colony's problems. He especially paid attention to the feeling among colonials that were bearing a disproportionate cost. William offered the compromise of colonial loyalty and military cooperation.

    The most notorious battle of the war was the French victory at Fort William Henry. This battle ended in a massacre of British soldiers by Indians. The Indians were allied with the French.

    By September 1760, the British controlled all of the North American frontier. The war between the two countries was effectively over. The British had won what they wanted.

    In 1763 a thing called Treaty of Paris was created. The Treaty of Paris ended the European "Seven Years War". It set the terms in which France could capitulate. France was forced to surrender all of her American possessions to the British.

    France lost all Canadian possessions. France lost most of the empire in India. Lastly France claims to the lands east of the Mississippi River.

    Spain got little after the Treaty of Paris. Spain got all French lands west of the Mississippi River. Lastly Spain got New Orleans.

    England got three big things. One being all French lands in Canada. Two being exclusive rights to Caribbean slave trade. Lastly three being commercial dominance in India.
  • French and Indian War After

    French and Indian War After
    Although the war with the French ended in 1763, the British continued to fight with the Indians over the issue of land claims. After this the Treaty of Paris was signed. Shortly after the Treaty of Paris was signed came another war called "Pontiac's War".
