French and Indian War
A war fought between Britain and France for control over the colonies of North America. Colonists were angered at the taxes from the government that followed at the end of the war. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act extended the molasses act by enforcing punishments on smuggling. It Also gave British courts the right to try colonial smugglers. The colonists were upset that they had no say in the development of this act. -
Stamp Act
Act declaring that all printed material must carry a stamp that was not free to provide money to Britain. After this act was passed colonists ordered a protest to boycott British goods. -
Declaratory Act
Document stating that Britain had the authority to tax the colonies whenever they wanted. This did not greatly upset the colonists because the stamp act was repealed. -
Townshend Act
This act taxed goods that were imported to the American colonies. The Townshend Act made the colonists start another boycott of British goods. -
Tea Act
Allowed the British East India company to give the colonists cheap tea. Colonists were not happy with the fact that the British were able to tax a universal product. Therefore, they dumped the tea into Boston harbor. -
Start of the Revolutionary War
War between the American colonies and Britain. The colonies were split since some wanted to gain independence and others wanted to stay with Britain.
