1865 - Agency set up to aid former slaves in adjusting themselves to freedom. It furnished food and clothing to needy blacks and helped them get jobs. -

13th Amendment Ratified
Ratified on December 6 1865, it was an Amendment that Abolished and prohibited slavery. It made slavery not allowed in any state or territory under the govt of the U.S.A. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
Passed by Congress on 9th April 1866 over the veto of President Andrew Johnson. The act declared that all persons born in the United States were now citizens, without regard to race, color, or previous condition. -
Memphis Race Riots
Riots that occurred in Memphis, Tennessee because blacks were given the right to vote. Blacks were attacked by members of the white majority resident to Memphis, Tennessee, illustrating Southern intransigence in the face of defeat and indicating unwillingness to share civil or social rights with the newly freed blacks. -
New Orleans Massacre of 1866
slaughter of blacks by armed whites. Occurred on July 30, during a violent conflict as white Democrats, including police and firemen, attacked Republicans, most of them black, parading outside the Mechanics Institute in New Orleans. -

2nd Reconsruction Act
Union army allowed to protect blacks registering to vote/voting
- South refused to vote on a new Constitution; prevents 14th from passing in their state -
3rd Recontruction Act
Congress unheld as superior on all matters related to Reconstruction. Each district included several former states of the Confederacy, with the exception of Tennessee, which was never under military rule. -
4th Reconstruction Act
Required ratification of the state constitution by only a majority of those voting rather than those who were registered. Any person duly registered in the State may vote in the election district where he offers to vote when he has resided therein for ten days. -
14 Amendment Ratified
Ratified July 28 1868, this Amendment Declared that all persons born in the U.S. are citizens and are guaranteed equal protection of the laws. This amendment also applied to newly former slaves. -

1st Black Senator Elected
Hiram Revels - The first African Americans to serve in the United States Congress were Republicans elected during the Reconstruction Era. After slaves were emancipated and granted citizenship rights, freedmen gained political representation in the Southern United States for the first time. -
1st Black Governor Elected
Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback - was an American publisher and politician, a Union Army officer, and the first African American to become governor of a U.S. state. A Republican, Pinchback served as the 24th Governor of Louisiana from December 9, 1872, to January 13, 1873. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875
law that banned discrimination in public facilities and transportation. It was originally drafted by Senator Charles Sumner in 1870, but was not passed until shortly after Sumner's death in 1875. -
Compromise of 1876
It gave the presidency to the republicans and made concessions to southern democrats. Hayes was Elected President. It resulted in the United States federal government pulling the last troops out of the South, and formally ending the Reconstruction Era. -
Reconstruction Ended
