In the 1825's slaves were not allowed to read and write. In fact, it was against the law because many slave owners thoughts it would give them dangerous ideas like escaping, rebelling etc.. -
The Auld's
In 1826 - 8 year old Frederick was sent to work as house boy for his owners relatives the Auld's. -

1827 - Sophia Auld was a kind owner and she taught him how to read and write until her husband forbade her. -

1833 - 15 year old Frederick was moved to a farm owned by Edward Covey AKA:Slave breaker. -
EBMIS
1834 -He joined the EBMIS AKA East Baltimore Mental Improvement Society. There he met Anna Murray, a free black women. -

About 1835’s Together they planned his escape, Frederick dressed in a sailors uniform and carrying a free man's passport.
They went to a free state., Though Frederick was still not really free.he could still be taken back to the slave states if they found him, so they took a new name “ Douglass”.
They had 5 children. -

Frederick began to speak at anti slavery meetings. -
Autobiographies and speeches
Frederick wrote his first autobiography : Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, it was published in 1845.
The book Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass could lead to Douglass's arrest .To avoid this he went on a speaking tour to Ireland and England for 2 years. -
Civil War
During the Civil War Douglass was the most admired African American in the USA. The South was pro slavery and the North was anti slavery. -
Lincoln
In 1863 he was president Lincoln advisor. Frederick convinced president Lincoln to let black soldiers into their army including 2 of his sons -
Work
After the civil war Douglass continued to lecture,writer and publish newspapers. -

Anna passed away in 1882, 2 years later he married Helen Pitts -

Frederick Douglass died of a heart attack in Washington DC aged 77.Died because of a heart attack.
