Fred Hollows was born on the 9th of April 1929 in Dunedin, New Zealand, his parents were Joseph and Clarice Hollows.
Fred Hollows was one of four brothers. Fred was named after his maternal grandfather, Frederick Cossom Marshall. Fred came from a working class family,Fred’s family lived in Dunedin untill Fred was seven years old. -

Fred Hollows immgrated to Australia from britain in 1965, were he studied ophthalmology (eye doctor ).
Fred moved to Australia to become Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of New South Wales.
While working in Sydney, Fred became aware of the need for an Aboriginal health service and set about establishing the first Aboriginal Medical Service. -

In 1968, after seeing two Gurindji elders as patients in the Prince of Wales Hospital eye clinic, fred went up to the a camp in the Northern Territory and saw a lot of Aboriginal people suffering with blinding trachoma. He realised after seeing that, he wanted to start a medical service for Aboriginal people. The Aboriginal Medical Service in Redfern opened its doors in 1971. -
Freds family
Fred Hollows Fred and Gabi married in 1980 and they had five children – Cam, Emma, Anna-Louise and twins Rosa and Ruth. Fred had two older children – Tanya and Ben – from his previous relationships.
Fred's son Cam is following in his father's footsteps. -
Diagnosed with cancer

Awarded Australian of the year
Fred hollows was awarded Australian of the year for his work in treating avoidable blindness in some of the world's poorest communities.
Many tens of thousands of people have been helped by Fred Hollows.Fred legacy was to show us want a difference we can all make to the world and how important it is to care. -
The Fred Hollows Foundation
Fred Hollows established the foundation in New Zealand in September 1992. -
Fred Hollows died
Fred was 63 when he died at his home in Randwick on February 10, 1993, three years after he was awarded Australian of the year.
On 17 February 1993,a funeral was held at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney, and in accordance with his own wishes, Fred Hollows was laid to rest in Bourke, where the red dirt and mulgas signal the start of the outback, which he loved so much. -
