He graduated from the Bowdoin College and in 1826 entered law school in Northampton, Massachusetts. -
Marriage
Franklin married Jane Means Appleton who's very opposite to Franklin. Jane kept distant from the political scene.
On December 2, 1863 she died from Tuberculosis (TB). -
The Mexican War
Franklin served as brigadier general in the Mexican War.
He was wounded in the leg when he fell from his horse. -
The Tragity
Franklin's and Jane's oldest son Benjamin Pierce at the age of eleven years old died in a train accident.(April 13, 1841--Jan. 6, 1853) Their first son Franklin Pierce Jr died at birth (Feb. 2, 1836--Feb. 5, 1836) and their second son Frank Robert Pierce died at four years old from a disease called epidemic typhus (Aug. 27, 1839--Nov. 14, 1843). -
Presidency
Franklin Pierce became the 14th President and he was the first to use a law book instead of the Bible to affirm his oath of office.
He also was the first to recite his inaugural address from memory. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act was signed into law after being introduced by President Pierce's rival, which he supported it. The Kansas-Nebraska Act is a plan that would divide the remainder of the Louisiana Purchase into two territories (Kansas and Nebraska), and allow the people in each territory to decide on the question of slavery. -
Party Refusal
Franklin Pierce's party refused to nominate him for a second term because they were unhappy with Franklin Pierce's performance. -
His Death
He died at the age of 64 years old and the cause of his death was cirrhosis of the liver as a result from years of heavy drinking. He now is buried in Concord, New Hamshire.
