Born in Harrison County, MO. He had four older brothers and sisters. Some of his family were in the Revolutionary and Civil wars. His family ended up moving to Oklahoma during his school years. -

U.S. NEUTRAL
The U.S. stayed neutral for over 2 years. During those 2 years a great debate began. It was over whether or not the U.S. should start to prepare for war or not. British officials used propaganda to try and win American support. -
FRANZ FERDINAND ASSASSINATED
heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. That basically was the spark of the war. The assassin was a member of the black hand. It was done to start a war that would bring down the Austro-Hungarian empire. -

DECLARED WAR
Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia and Russia mobilized their army. On August 1st Germany declared war on Russia then 2 days later France got involved and WW1 started. -
LUSITANIA
A British passenger ship called the Lusitania entered the war zone. A German submarine sunk it. 1,200 passengers were killed. 128 of those people were Americans. From February 3 and March 21, German boats have sunk 6 American ships. -
WOMEN SERVING
WW1 was the first war women ever served in. Only non-combat positions though. Navy approved enlistment of women to meet clerical needs. By the end of WW1 11k women served in the Navy. The army refused to let women join. -
DEBATE
America was at war after the debate. The senate passed resolution by a vote of 82-6. White house was 375-50. President Woodrow Wilson signed the resolution. -
ESPIONAGE ACT
Espionage act made it illegal to aid enemy, present false reports and interfere with war effort. Anyone who was caught going against this would be fined $10,000 dollars. They would also be sentenced to 20 years in prison. -
WAR INDUSTRIES
War Industries Board were established to arrange production of war material.. The food administration which was run by Herbert Hoover was the most successful and in charge for raising the production of food while lowering civilian consumption. The Fuel Administration was run by Harry Garfield. They manage of nation’s coal and oil. Harry showed daylight savings time to conserve energy. -
MILITARY ENTRY
Frank was too small for the Marine Corps. The Navy turned him away because he had flat feet. Enlisted into the Army. He lied about his age to get in. Frank went through basic training at Fort Riley, KS. -
DOUGHBOY
During WW1 he drove ambulances and motorcycles. He was told the quickest way to the front lines was to drive ambulances. He was very busy transporting wounded soldiers to medical care. This is where he earned the nickname ‘doughboy’. This was the name given to members of the Army or Marine Corps during the war. -
POWs
Frank had to escort an officer to France who was left behind. Assigned to prisoner of war escort company. After the war he spent his time escorting POWs back to Germany. -
NWLB
Woodrow Wilson was the founder of the National War Labor Board. It was made to prevent strikes which would disrupt war effort. They tried to agree on labor arguments that could’ve lead to strikes. This helped in Americas time of war. -
END OF WAR
Allied forces came together and pushed back the enemy powers. Gov signed truce. Fighting stopped. -
RETURNED HOME
After two years with AEF (American Expeditionary Force) he returned home on the USS Pocahontas. He attended business school in Oklahoma City. Then he worked in financial services and joined the New York national guard.
