The message was intercepted by British intellegence in January of 1917. On March 1, 1917 the news of the Zimmermann Telegram was printed in newspapers across America.

Come to find out his commander wanted to fight as well but he had to follow orders. A few more weeks later he got assigned to to escort an officer to France, but he never fought.
