English reffered to the confederacy as the Six Nations. Iriquois remained inependent by trading with both Britain and France. -
Pickawilliny,Ohio
Hostility grew between the two countries. British fur traders built a fort called Pickawillany. French attacked Pickawilliny and drove British people out of Ohio. The French also began raiding towns such as Maine and New York. -
George Wahington
Governor Robert Dinwiddie sent a surveyor named George Washington into Ohio. Washington was 21 years old at the time. His mission was to tell the French that they were trespassing on land that Great Britain had claimed. -
First Meeting
Representatives from several colonies met in Albany, New York to discuss the threat of war. They also hoped to persuade the Iriquois to defend the British. They also wanted to find a way to defend themselves against the French. -
Wishbone Rivers
Washington becomes lieutenant colonel. Dinwiddie sent him back to Ohio with a militia of 150 men.The militia built a fort where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio River.
