Website I got this from Guido da Vigevano was the first to come up with the idea of a car, but never made a model. Leonardo da Vinci later designed a clockwork driven tricycle with tiller steering and a differential mechanism between the rear wheels. -

Website The first self powered car was designed by Nicholas Joseph Cugnot and was put together with the help of M. Brezin. At the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers, in Paris there is actually a replica of the vehile in that museum. -
Second Self-Powered Unit
Website The second self powered vehicle weighted 8000lbs and it's top speed was 2mph on the cobble stone roads of Paris. The picture is of the vehicle driving around the streets of Paris and hitting a stone wall. It had a tendency to tip forward unless it had a canon on the rear of the vehicle. Its main purpose was to carry the canons around town, so it served its purpose well. -

In England around the time of the 1830's they were trying to come up with a new type of car that wasn't resricted to the rails like trains.
