Stand in the Schoolhouse
Attempting to support his slogan of segregation forever, Governor George Wallace of Alabama stands in the doorway of the University of Alabama. He prevents the entry of two black students, Viviam Malone Jones and James Hood. According to the Brown v. BOE Supreme Court case ruling, the school had to be desegregated. JFK Assassination
While in Dallas attending a presidential Motorcade, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. His confirmed killer was Lee Harvey Oswald.Before he could face trial, Oswald was killed by Jack Ruby. Black Panther Party
The Black Panther Party was a black nationalism group that originally called for protection in African-American neighborhoods from police brutality. The Black Panthers grew in popularity, and came to the forefront of the 60s counterculture movement. Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a long, costly armed conflict that pitted the communist regime of North Vietnam and its southern allies, known as the Viet Cong, against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States.The U.S. government viewed its involvement in the war as a way to prevent a communist takeover of South Vietnam. Assassination of Robert Kennedy
United States Senator Robert Kennedy, brother of former President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1968 while in Los Angeles. He was shot while passing through the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel. Vietnam War Protest/Anti-War Movement
During the Vietnam War, there were many protests and rallies. The peace movement and many others viewed the war as unethical, and believed the U.S. had no business being there. People would get up and speak in front of crowds, hoping to drum up support for the movement.

Moon Landing
The U.S. Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the Moon. Neil Armstrong and then Buzz Aldrin both set foot on the moon, collecting lunar rock to bring back to earth. Their other crew member, Michael Collins, piloted their spacecraft in orbit until their return back to earth.

Assassination Attempt upon President Reagan
The Assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan happened on Monday, March 30, 1981, 69 days after becoming President. Ronald Reagan was leaving after a speaking engagement at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C.. As Reagan left to enter his car, John Hinckley, Jr. fired his gun. Reagan was shot in the lung, but with quick care he was able to survive and recover. Hinckley was found not guilty of the shooting because of his mental illness.

Watergate Scandal
Five men are arrested for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate hotel. They were under the Nixon administration, and tapes from the president's office revealed he attempted to cover illegal happenings numerous times. Due to his sure impeachment, Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974.

Hurricane Carmen
Hurricane Carmen was the most intense tropical cyclone of the 1974 Atlantic hurricane season. A destructive and widespread storm, Carmen originated as a tropical disturbance that emerged from Africa toward the end of August. ...Hurricane Carmen was a category 4 hurricane with winds at 150 mph. Carmen covered 2,380,500 acres, and disrupted fish and shrimp in the area.Throughout its course, the hurricane killed 8 people and caused $162 million in damage.

HIV Outbreak (AIDS)
In 1981, a rare form of cancer was reported among gay men in New York and California. It was commonly known as "gay cancer" before it became the face of HIV and AIDS. Men who seemed healthy experienced symptoms ranging from fevers to pneumonia. HIV became one of the biggest health concerns in modern history, and the disease still plagues us today.
