Forrest mom told him he was named after the civil war hero Nathan Bedford. He founded the KKK. In the movie Nathan was supposed to be one of Forrest ancestors.The KKK (Ku Klux Klan) is three distinct secret movements at different points in the history of the United States. They started in 1865. -
Elvis Presley
In the movie Elvis Presley comes to stay at the Boarding Home that the Gumps run. Young Forrest dances in a very odd way while Elvis plays the guitar. This eventually inspires Elvis Presley to find new dance moves similar to those that Forrest showed him. Although this did not happen in reality. Elvis Presley was one of the greatest revolutions in Rock and Roll and Pop culture. -

After Forrest came back from the war there were a lot of hippies around. Hippies were doing all types of drugs, everything under the sun. Jenny was a hippie as well. -
JFK assassination
During the movie, first Forrest met JFK because he certified an All-American football player for his work at the University of Alabama. Then in Dallas JFK was in a parade for an upcoming election and was assassinated while he was in the car, he was shot in the head. JFK negotiated the Nuclear Test-Ban treaty. -
Forrest joins the Vietnam war
Forrest joined the Vietnam war (1955-1975) and while doing so he met a friend name Bubba. Bubba is the one who taught Forrest about the shrimping business. Also The Vietnam War was a long, costly armed conflict that pitted the communist regime of the North Vietnam and its southern allies. The war started by North Vietnamese government and the Viet Cong were fighting to reunify Vietnam. -
Medal of Honor
Forrest received a medal of honor for his courage fighting in the Vietnam War. President Lyndon B. Johnson, America's 36th president, gave it to him. He was the president from 1963 to 1969. He took JFK place after he was murdered. He is remembered for his "Great Society" social service program. -
Moon landing
The moon landing was by the Apollo II in July. It was on the tv while Forrest was playing on the ping pong table. Neil Armstrong was the man to step on the moon. The purpose of the moon landing was because the Soviet Union launched the satellite Sputnik, and the space race began. The space race began in 1967 and we finally got a man on the moon in 1969. -
Ping Pong diplomacy
During the movie Gump learned how to play ping pong while recovering from a butt injury in the Vietnam war. He rapidly became skilled in it and fascinated all his peers. Later he participated in the ping pong diplomacy in China. The Ping Pong Diplomacy is the exchange of table tennis players between the United States and Peoples Republic of China in the early 1970s. -

When Forrest stayed at the hotel President Nixon sent him to the Watergate hotel and he saw what was going on and called the hotel service people and told him he saw lights and people in another room it was preventing him from sleeping. -

Forrest sees the president candidate and Governor of Alabama get shot in the news. He was known very good for his resistance against the blacks. He was shot 5 times. He ran for president 4 times. -
