Gov Wallace and the Segregation of the University of Alabama
Wallace was elected as governor on his platform promising complete segregation of Alabama however in 1954 the Brown V. Board of Education act was passed declaring segregation unconstitutional. Wallace blocked the door of the enrollment office to prevent coloured people from enrolling at the university, but June 10 1963 President Kennedy ordered the desegregation of the University and the first two coloured students passed through its doors. -
March on Washington
The March on Washington attracted thousands of people for a peaceful demonstration to promote civil rights and economic equality for African Americans. This televised event included the presentation of songs, speeches and prayer and include Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech. -
Assasination of President Kennedy
President Kennedy was the youngest president to take office, he was also the first Irish president and the only Catholic. He accomplished many events during his short term in office including putting a man in space, the rise of the Berlin wall, the Vietnam war and the civil rights movement. He was well loved and his sudden death came as a shock to many. -
War in Vietnam
The Vietnam war differed greatly from WW1 and WW2. the soldiers who fought in this war were brainwashed with propoganda and truly believed they were protecting their nation from a threat. The soldiers often returned with missing limbs, loss of sight, paraplegics and recieved little compensation for their heroic acts. This sparked a rebellion in the citizens of the United States and lead to many peace demonstrations and rebellions lead by the younger generations. -
The Watergate Scandal
Early in the morning several burglars were discovered in a break in to the Watergate building. They were caught steeling private documents belonging to the Democratic National Committee and it was later discovered that it was President Nixon's ploy to ensure his reelection in the upcoming election. This event ruined his political career and he resigned shortly after. -
Hurricane Carmen
When Hurricane Carmen hit the United States the damage it caused was astronomical. Many industries including the fishing industry collapsed due to the damage Carmen caused. In Forrest Gump you see Forrest benefit greatly from this disaster as BubaGump shrimp takes off, however many people were left with nothing after this severe storm. -
Investment in Apple
Forrest's investment in apple made little sense to him at the time, however Apple went on to become one of the leading companies in computer technology and was a very profitable investment to be made. -
Forrest's Run
During Forrest's run several items were supposedly created; the first being the **** happens bumper sticker, and the second being the creation of the smiley face t-shirt. -
Jenny's Diagnosis of HIV
Jenny's diagnosis of HIV was not uncommon for people of her generation. She most likely contracted the virus during her earlier years when she was experimenting with new things. Since so little was known about the disease there was no cure and diagnosis was often late.
