  • First Bowl Game (East-West Bowl)

    East-West game in Pasadena, California played between a top team from each coast. Michigan defeats Stanford 49-0, with Stanford forfeiting in the third quarter.
  • East-West Bowl renamed Rose Bowl

    With competing of the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, the name was bound to change.
  • First Orange Bowl

    Pitted University of Miami against an invited opponent. Final score: Bucknell 26 Miami 0.
  • First Sugar Bowl

    Hosted by Tulane University, Tulane defeated Temple 20-14.
  • First Fiesta Bowl

    Created by the WAC to gain recognition for its champion. The WAC's Arizona State defeated Florida in the inaugural game by a score of 45 to 38.
  • NCAA adopts 3-division set-up

    In august 1973, the current system of Division 1, 2 and 3 was adopted by the NCAA. Division 1 and 2 programs can offer athletic scholarships, while Division 3 programs cannot.
  • Division 1 Football is split into 1-A and 1-AA

  • 1-A renamed FBS, 1-AA renamed FCS
