The XYZ Affair was an incident between French and United States diplomats that resulted in a limited, undeclared war known as the Quasi-War. Three French officals(in code as XYZ) demanded embarassing bribes of $250,000. U.S. and French negotiators restored peace with the Convention of 1800, also known as the Treaty of Mortefontaine. -
Presidentional Election
John Adams(federalist) merely defeated Thomas Jefferson. Most southern states voted for T.Jefferson while most northern states voted for J. Adams. T. Jefferson became the vice president due to a feature in the constitution. -
Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
Virginia/KentuckyThis declared the Sedition Act unconstitutional. The resolves beven hinted that the states had the power to nullify fereral laws that they think are unconstitution. This doctrine threater to dissolve the union. -
Quasi War
Quasi WarThe 1797 XYZ Affair was the last straw for Americans. A wave of Anti-French feeling engulfed the nation. French flags were torched and the people were furious. Diplomatic relations between the US and France reached an all-time low. The Quasi War ended on September 30, 1800 when the Treaty of Mortefontaine ended hostilities. -

The reason this happened was because French started seizing American Merchant ships. Congress expanded the army and gathered a small navy, which won some unexpected victories over French Warships. To pay for the navy Congress imposed new taxes on stamps and land. -
Alien & Sedition Acts
Alien & Sedition Act Alien Act- Authorized the President to arrest and deport noncitizens who complain about the federal goverment. Most noncitizens supported the Democratic Republicans. Sedtition Act-prohibited public opposition to the government.Allowed juries to acquite defenants who could prove the literal truth of their statements. -
Adams suspends expansion of army
Adams sensed that the Sedition Act and new federal texes were unpopular. Adams sent new diplomats to France seeking peace. These moves angered Federalist. Adams then lost the heated election to Jefferson. -
election of 1800
The voters meant for Jefferson to be President and Burr to be Vice President. Since the Constitution did not allow a distinction between electoral votes, the House of Representatives had to choose between the two. Hamilton preferred Jefferson, so the Federalist congressman allowed Jefferson to become President. This transfer of power from one party to another set a valuable precedent. -
Marbury v. Madison
Marbury v. Madison The case began when an obscure Federalist, William Marbury, was designated as a justice of the peace in the District of Columbia. Madison refused to deliver the official papers of appointment. The unhappy appointees invoked an act of Congress and sued for their jobs in the Supreme Court. Marshall ruled in favor of Madison by declaring unconstitutional part of the Judiciary Act of 1789. -

Hamilton killed by Burr
DuelAaron Burr became offended by Alexander Hamilton's critism because Alexander Hamilton perfered Thomas Jefferson. He( Aaron Burr) then challenged A. Hamilton to a duel where A. Hamilton was mortally wounded and died. Therefor resulting in the win for A. Burrs. The men meet on the dueling grounds at Weehawken, New Jersey on the morning of July 11. Each fires a shot from a .56 caliber dueling pistol. In the end Burr won the duel. -
Jefferson lowers debt
Jefferson cut the national debt by $22 million when he took office. He did this by making major cuts to the army and navy and streamlined the governments bureaucracy. He also reduced taxes to help bring the debt down.He also benifited from when customs revenue from imports increased with a major growth in foreign trade.
