On December 6th, 1973, Ford was confirmed to be voted into the House, beginning his political career. -
Vice Presidency
After the resignation of Vice President Agnew, Nixon selected Ford to be his new VP. -
Agnew's Fall
Vice President Agnew was Nixon original choice as VP. He served alongside him until October of 1967 when he was charged with crimes such as tax evasion, leading him to resign from his position and making way for Ford to rise. -
Vote to VP
Upon being chosen by President Nixon, Ford had to be voted in favor of by Senate. He was elected by a 97% yes vote. -
Becoming President
Following allegations and impeachment due to Watergate, Nixon resigned from his presidency and Ford took over as president of the United States. -
Inauguration
When Ford was inaugurated as the 38th president of the United States, he did many unique things. His inauguration was the first to ever occur as a result of the resignation of the former President. It was also the last non-scheduled, extraordinary inauguration to take place in the 20th century. He was also the first VP appointed under the terms of the 25th Amendment. After 8 months in office as VP, President Ford went on to serve in office for 2 years and not be re-elected. -
Beginning of Presidency
After being sworn into office, Ford quickly moved to pardon President Nixon for any crimes he may have committed. -
Pardoning
Some people wondered why President Ford would pardon President Nixon. He pardoned him because he wanted to put it in America's past and focus on issues at hand. While a controversial choice, Ford believed it was for the best of the country.
