Salt mines were first discovered in Salzburg, Austria. This was the time that they discoved adding sal to your food helps it last longer. The scientific reason is that the salt removes the water in the food. The bacteria cannot survive without water so the growth of bacteria is slowed down. -

Ancient Greeks discover that food does not spoil as fast when it is cooled by ice or snow. We still use this discovery today but in fridges and freezers.
