Following the end of the first World War, agriculture and food production across the nation was beginning to improve, but not at a quick enough pace. This photo taken by Marrett Burridge Boisse vain shows a fertilizer plot in California testing potatoes growing in a nearby field before they are sold to the public. Food production was very advanced even in states that have not been a part of the union as long.

With the start of the Great Depression, the food supply in the United States was in a complete crisis. Farmers couldn't afford to grow crops and people couldn't afford to eat. This photo shows just one of the many food lines that appear throughout the USA to assistance citizens during time. It was not long after the U.S. was recovering from the Great Depression that the country was thrusted into the Second World War. This put a whole new strain on the food supply. This pamphlet published by the U.S. Office of Price Administration details how and why rationing food was handled national and how each individual should handle their food.
