Founded by Booker T. Washington to support businesses run by African Americans. -
Black Americans were excluded from Congress after 1901
A step backwards in the fight for equal rights. White elected officials began limiting involvement of blacks and poor whites by establishing barriers such as poll taxes. This demographic being excluded from the polls caused a decline in the votes that black nominees would be able to obtain. -
Establishment of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)
Founded by a group of blacks and whites, including Ida Well-Barnett, WEB Du Bois, and Florence Kelley to promote equality for colored people. -
World War 1
Increased labor needs due to soldiers being called to duty. Blacks benefited form the labor shortage. -
The 369th Infantry Regiment
An all black infantry regiment who fought in WWI and were the first blacks to attain notoriety and recognition for their bravery in combat.
