Bell's Telephone
Alexander Graham Bell's fascination with speech led to his own working telephone. It had a short range, proved by his now famous order to his assistant through his telephone, "Watson! Come here! I want to see you!" -
Update to the Telephone
Almon Brown Strowger invented the rotary dial near 1890, but it wasn't implemented until 1903. This update is still in use on some telephones today. -
Later Update to Telephones
The push-button dial replaced the rotary dial. It was shown to the public in 1963 by AT&T. -
"Angler"/Simon Personal Computer
The "Angler" prototype personal computer was created by Frank Canova while at IBM. It featured an ability to place and receive cellular calls and send/receive faxes and emails. It included an address book, calendar, appointment scheduler, calculator, world time clock, and notepad, as well as other applications such as maps, stock reports and news. The Angler later grew into the Simon Personal Computer in 1994. -
LG Prada
The LG Prada was the first mobile phone released with a large capacitive touchscreen. -
iPhone
The iPhone showcased a multi-touch capacitive touch screen after the LG Prada. It was, of course, very successful and because of that, it is likely the first thing most think of when they think of a smartphone.
