    Thomas Jefferson is inaugurated into office. He becomes the third president of the United States. He also made the decision of buying the Louisiana Purchase.

    The treaty was signed for the Louisiana Purchase. The U.S. pays France only $15 million for it. It extends west from the Mississippi River to The Rocky Mountains. The United States almost doubles in size because of it.

    Lewis and Clark left from St. Louis Missouri to explore the Louisiana Territory that the U.S. had just bought. One of the main reasons they did this was to find a good route to the Pacific Ocean. They also were set out to do this to establish trade with the Natives.

    British capture Washington, DC, and set fire to White House and Capitol. The British who did this were doing it in response against the American attack in York, Ontario. President Madison and many others left during this time.

    Sept. 13–14, 1814 Francis Scott Key writes Star-Spangled Banner.He wrote it as he watched the British attack on Fort McHenry in Baltimore. It was not turned into the national anthem until many years later.

    John Quincy Adams is inaugurated as the sixth president. He had become president after the U.S. had failed to produce a winner. Andrew Jackson was very mad and upset by this event and believed that he should have won.

    President Jackson signs the Indian Removal Act. It forces Native Americans to leave their homes. It forced any Native Americans living in the eastern part of the country to lands west of the Mississippi River to move to another area, or they will be moved by the government. This was one of the worse things that happened in the History of America, because many people died.
