In the War of 1812 the United States attempted to take on Great Britain. The US suffered many defeats. The United States did however win the Battle of New Orleans which greatly boosted America's confidence. This war was resolved by the Treaty of Ghent in 1815. -
The Monroe Doctrine was signed.
James Monroe was the author of this document. The Monroe Doctrine was a policy that stated that America would no longer tolerate colonization from the Western Hemisphere. This was a warning to European nations. -
John Quincy Adams Inauguration
In this election there was no clear winner. Congress voted John Quincy Adams into presidency. It is believed that some kind of deal was made. During his presidency John Quincy Adams resolved things unstated in the Treaty of Ghent about the War of 1812. -
Indian Removal Act
The Indian Removal Act was during Andrew Jackson's time as president. This act gave Jackson the right to relocate tribes to west of the Mississippi. Some went peacefully but others resisted. -
John Tyler Inauguration
John Tyler was initially the Vice President of the United States. When William Henry Harrison died John Tyler took his place as President. He was the first Vice President to become President. -
James Knox Polk was Inaugurated
James Knox Polk led the United States in the Mexican American War. He was the youngest president to take office. The Oregon Treaty was also negotiated when he was president. -
Zachary Taylor Inauguration.
President Taylor was anti-slavery. He encouraged Mexico and California to apply for statehood. He knew that they would be anti-slavery as well. The South was upset and felt betrayed.
