The Thirty Years Peace Is Signed
In 445BCE, the First Peloponnesian War ended in an arrangement known as the Thirty Years Peace. Terms of the treaty included:
- Arbitration for future conflict between the two powers
- Both city states were recognised as legitimate powers
- Neutral city states were allowed to join either alliance -
435 BCE
Dispute Between Corinth & Corcyra Over Epidamnus Begins
-Dispute between Corinth and its colony of Corcyra occurred over a Cocrya sub-colony called Epidamnus.
-In 435BCE, a fighting broke out between the oligarchs and the democrats.
-Corcyra refused to send help, however Corinth did sent help, resulting in a quarrel between the two,
-Ended in a naval battle with a victory for Corcyra. Athens and Sparta stayed neutral.

432 BCE
The Megarian Decree
In 442, Pericles proposed (and it was accepted) law known as the Megarian Decree. Pericles prepared for war, reorganising Athenian finances for the navy andd strengthening city walls. The Megarian Decree excluded Megara from the markets and ports of the Athenian empire, meaning that they would starve and die. -
432 BCE
Battle of Potidaea
The Corinthians wanted to strike Athens as revenge for aiding Corcyra in the dispute over Epidamnus. They tried to involve Sparta, but they refused so they wouldn't break the peace.
Potidaea was a Corinthian colony and member of the Delian League, but as they had to send tribute and were being ruled as a subject state, they revolted knowing Athens would retaliate.
Athens demanded Potidaea pull down their walls but they refused. Sparta defended Pot, Athens fought Pot and it created war.
