Eadweard Muybridge
In 1872, Eadweard Muybridge took photos of a horse to see if all of their hooves got off the ground at once. The photos could not confirm it. In 1879, he tried taking multiple pictures at once. He noticed that if the pictures were played really fast, they looked like one moving picture. -
The Peephole Kinetoscope
Thomas Edison invented the kinetoscope in 1891. They played short films that people could watch through a peephole. Only one person could watch at a time. -
Nickelodeons
Nickelodeons were theaters that showed films to the public. It only cost a nickel to get in. These films could be watched by many people at a time. -
The First Hollywood Studio
Thomas Edison did not want people making films. To avoid him, people started moving to California to make films. Nestor Studios built the first movie studio in Hollywood in 1911. -
Sound in Film
The first film shown with sound was called "The Jazz Singer." Film producers thought nobody would like having sound on movies, but they were wrong. People loved having sound on movies. -
First Colored Movies
The first colored movies came out in 1939. Although people had been experimenting since 1912. They were made using Technicolor cameras. -
World War II
During WWII, many movies about the war were created. The sudden interest in war movies led to people wanting fantasy and horror movies. -
3D Movies
3D movies became popular in 1952. They used technology called Space Vision 3D. They began to lose popularity in 1954. -
Blockbuster Era
In 1975, "Jaws" was released. More movies started coming out in Summer. This started the Blockbuster Era. -
VCRs
During the 1980's, many people owned a VCR. Theaters tried to have them banned for home use. This proved unsuccessful. -
Special Effects
During the 1990's, CGI was increasingly popular. Some movies that used special effects were "Jurassic Park," "Terminator 2," and "Avatar." -
DVDs
DVD's were gaining popularity during the 2000's. Most movies were now using CGI. This was very successful in theaters and on home theater systems.
