How film began
Motion pictures started with a bet. Eddward Mybridge and his friends where watching horses race when he bet $25,000 that a horse at full speed could have all four of it's hooves off the ground. To prove his theory, he set up numerous cameras along the race track and had them take pictures as the horse raced past. He won his bet, and at the same time accidentally discovered how to produce motionpicture. -
The kinetoscopes
It was a device that would allow a single person to view a series of moving pictures. It works by someone turning a crank on the side of the device while someone looks through a peephole on the front. Through the peephole, the many pictures inside can be seen turning in fast motion to give the illusion that it is a single moving picture. -
The cinematographes
Invented by the Lumi'ere brothers, a device that would project images onto a screen, allowing an audience to view it. The films where very short during that time, lasting only 30 seconds to 60 seconds. The first place to obtain one these devices was a Paris caf'e, charging only a one frane admission. -
The films in vaudevilles
The vaudevilles where small theaters that featured short dramatic scenes, skits, comedy routines, along with song and dance numbers. After each performance, they would show a short film to give the actors time to set up for the next showing. They would soon change from vaudevilles to nckelodeons. -
The first narrative
The Great Train Robbery the first narrative to be showed in film, directed by Edwin Porter. It was one of the first films to feature a variety of camera angles. With 14 scenes and lasting only 12 minutes, it was considered an epic by that time's standerds. -
Uprise of motion pictures
By 1910, nickelodeon theaters where attracting about 26 million people every week. Soon it started to attract profits as well. Within five years, it's viewers and profits would more than double. -
The MPPC
Stands for Motion Picture Patents Company, which was made and led by Thomas Edison. -
How Hollywood came to be
Many people did not want be under the control of the MPPC. Many producers escaped to the west coast (Hollywood) to set up thier own sets. -
