Started With a Bet
Edward Muybridge bet $25,000 that at some point all four hooves of a horse would be off of the ground if it were running full speed. To settle the bet he took pictures in rapid succession and upon flipping through them they discovered that it looked like the horse was actually moving. With that discovery they were able to start the film industrty. -
Early On
Seen mostly from storefront areas and as acts from Vaudevilles, later called Nickelodians. Generally were rather short, lasting only about a minute or a single scene. Most had little to no camera movement and required very little cinematic skill. -
The First "Film"
This year marks the introduction to the first motion picture that can be considered a "film". This is when the films start to be edited and narrated before release. -
Opening of Success
Nickelodeon, the first successful film-only theatre, opened in Pittsburgh. There were enough films for a programme to last about 30 minutes that could be changed to keep the local audience interested. Within a few years there were thousands of Nickelodeon studios across the nation. -
The Spread of Creation
Most filming was still done in New York, however due to the Edison Company's strictness on production many people moved to California for safety. Thanks to the sunshine and scenery many successful films were produced. Also due to the close borders with Mexico there was a quick escape from Edison's goons to protect their gear. -
Introduction to Sound
Up until this point there was no sound in most films around the world. This was known as the "Silent Era of Film" which typically featured live orchestras to keep viewer interest. By adding sound to the videos it led to the birth of movies. -
Spread of Sound
This year, known as the "Watershed Year", was the start of increased fluidity in movies with sound. With William Wellman, Rouben Mamoulian, and Alfred Hitchcock making successful, well-made movies with sound it became more accepted among the populace. This led to the advance of sound usage. -
Film Renaissance
With wartime propaganda used so much in WW2 the film industry boomed. Many pseudo-realistic war films were produced leading to advancements in film production. -
Protests With Film Industry
The Lettrists avante-gardists protested the film screening of "Treatise on Slime and Eternity". With critiscism of Charlie Chaplin and the creationg of a more extremist group many disruptions continued throughout the years.
