Edward Muybridge bet $25,000 that all 4 of the horses feet we're off the ground at some point while they ran so to prove it they set up many cameras to take a picture as soon as the horse ran by. when they looked at all the pictures together and looked at them quickly from left to right they realized the illusion of a movie picture was seen. -
Vaudeville
Vaudevilles were small theatres thaf features live music and shows, to kill time between shows and set up the vaudevilles began playing short films and it created the hype for motion picture films, it rose their popularity. -
Kinetoscope
Thomas Edison and William Dickson created the kinetoscope which allowed one person at a time to watch a short film. The way it worked was that a strip of photo film would pass by quickly and it would seem like the object was really moving while one person looked at it through a peephole. -
Movie Projector
When people started realizing that the illusion created by taking constant pictures became another way to record events they started experimenting and the movie projector was invented, it made motion pictures available to the public by showing many pictures put together to create a 30 second short. -
Lumiere Brothers
These brothers came up with the idea of producing short 30 second movies for the public by using the movie projector and allowing more than one person in the room watch the film. This idea was better than Edison's, who really only wanted to make as much money as possible. They began showing the short films at a cafe in Paris and charged one franc. -
Nickelodeon
As short films became more and more popular Nickelodeons were created, they were the first kind of movie theatres. Nickelodeons were buildings where people would go and pay a nickel to watch films, and watch 2 live acts. The 30-60 second shorts were accompanied by man made sound effects, and piano. -
The Great Train Robbery
This was the first epic film that lasted more than a couple of seconds, it was directed by one of Thomas Edison's employees. This short film was praised by many because it was the first film ever to switch between narratives and different camera angles which had never been seen before. -
Film Boom
The Nickelodeons became extremely popular and brought it more than 20 million people each year, Thomas Edison was interested in making as much money as possible so he did his best to control everything to earn a big profit. -
3D Film
The first 3D movie ever was shown in New York City, it was called the Power Of Love and it was by Nat Deverich. This was a great step for film making because it was something that made films even more realistic than they already seemed to the public. -
Charlie Chaplin
Charlie became the first actor to get paid as much as he did in the film industry, by 1917 he was earning 1 million dollars a year. He was known for starring in comedy films, and spreading positive messages. -
Hollywood
In the 1920's the film industry moved from New York to Los Angeles, California. Not only did they move to have an easy escape from Edison but the weather, scenery, and lighting was great for filming.
