  • The Bet

    The Bet
    Eadward Muybridge argued that at some point, a galloping horse has all four feet off the ground. Many others claimed this was impossible. An experiment was made where a rapid sequence of photos would be taken of a running horse. Eadward proved himself right and won the $25,000 dollar bet.
  • Peephole Kinetoscope

    Peephole Kinetoscope
    Thomas Edison enjoyed the idea of only one personat at a time being able to see the moving images. He invented the peepole kinetoscope. The peephole kinetoscope was what introduced the basic approach of later movie projectors. A person could watch a seres of pictures in rapid motion through a peephole on top of the kinetoscope.

    The Lumiére Brothers, Auguste and Louid, made a projector which showed motion pictures on screen to an audience. They called it the Cinematographe. They produced a series of short films between 30 to 60 seconds long and showed them in cafes in Paris.
  • Vaudville

    Vaudville
    From the 1880s until the 1930s, vaudvilles were very popular in America. Vaudvilles were small theatres which featured short dramatic skits, comedy routines, and song and dance numbers. In order to overcome their competition and to fill in time between acts, vaudvilles began to feaure short films.

    Employee of Thomas Edison, Edwin Porter, creates e first US Narrative Film, called the The Great Train Robbery. This film had cross cutting bwtween different narrative squences, and an actual story line and introduced different camera positions and angles. The film had 14 scens and it lasted 12 minutes.

    Nickelodeons expanded from vaudville. Nickelodeons were small theatres that featured films accompanied by music and sound effects. These theatres got their name because the admission fee was five cents, or a nickel.

    MPPC
    The Motion Picture Patents Company, or MPPC, is founded by none other than Thomas Edison. They planned to control almost everything in their idustry- from production of raw film stock to film distribution. The MPPc would raid studios that tried to make films. However, the MPPC also set standards and created a internationally competitive motion picture industry.

    Nickelodeon Theatres Popularity
    By 1910, nickelodeon eatres began to attract 26 million viwers a week. This number more than doubled five years later. People looking for a potential big profit began to pay more attention to the film's popularity. In order to make more money, a monopoly was created in an attempt to control everything in the motion picture industry.

    Birth of a Nation
    D.W Griffth finds Hollywood and stays there for several months, shooting several films during his stay. He shots the film 'Birth of a Nation' in and around Hollywood. The film became succesful and led to Hollywood being the center of the movie industry.
  • Warner Bros. Studio

    Warner Bros. Studio
    The Warner Brothers Studio was a company founded by four brothers, Harry, Albert, Samuel and Jack in 1923. Each of the brothers had begun producing their own films in 1913. The Warner Brothers Studio was the first motion picture studio to introduce the first genuine talking picture.

    The Jazz Singer was a American musical film made in 1927. The Jazz Singer is the first full length motion picture that included dialouge. This film was produced by the Warner Bros.
  • First Oscars

    First Oscars
    The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Scientists held the first Academy Awards ceremony. The tickets cost five dollars, 270 people attended and the presentation lasted fifteen minutes. The awards at the time were presented in twelve categories.
