Portuguese traders arrival in Japan
In 1543 Portuguese traders first arrive in Japan. It wasn't the usual way for country's to meet as the Portuguese boat ran aground on Japanese shores. -
Japan closes the door to the West
In 1603 Japan closes the door to the West, as this was a new military rule, therefore isolating the country from everyone else. The trading was stopped and Japanese people had to survive on their own produce. -
The beginning of the Heian period
After the capital moved to what is now known as Kyoto, certain noble families, such as the Fujiwara family, gained control of the government, ruling on behalf of the emperor. When the indigenous style of culture that had the people living close to their natural surroundings, took over from the Chinese-style culture that had dominated the Nara period, the palaces of the emperor and the residences of the noble families incorporated beautiful gardens and shinden-zukuri style of architecture.
