Hurricane Hugo made land fall September, 9, 1989. It killed 61 people. Left 100,000 homeless and caused 9 billion dollars in damage. Fema responded 13 days after landfall. FEMA is slow to take action.Once the agency moves in, red tape, minimal resources, and poor management slow down the relief efforts. The agnecy is ridiculed by local government and S.C. residents. -
Hurricane Andrew
Andrew made landall on FL as a catagory 5 causing 26,5 billion dollars, and killing thousands. FEMA responded quicly but not in disaster relief. They started in body pick up disposing of thousand of unknown bodies. Again FEMA was ridiculed as being caught flat footed in assistance -
September 11th Bush puts FEMA under Homeland security
After the terroist attack on the world trade center. President Bush puts FEMA under Home Land Security to help them out in their duties -
Hurricane Katrina
Katrina took the lives of 1,836 people and the damage was estimated at 41 billion dollars. FEMA was again ridiculed for being late on the response leaving hundreds stranded. They where highly under staffed and few resources. It took months to get the resources and proper shelter for the refugees.
