1891 First Constitutional Convention
The 1891 constitutional convention held in Sydney in 1891 March to consider a draft constitution for proposed federation of the British colonies in Australia and New Zealand. There were 46 delegates at the convention chosen by the seven colonial parliaments. Convention approved a draft largely written by Andrew Inglis Clark. -
1893 Federal Constitution
Corowa confrence, Victoria lawyer Dr John Quick proposed a three step process to achive a federal constitution. -
New Zealand gave women the vote
On 19 September 1893 the governor, Lord Glasgow, signed a new Electoral Act into law. As a result of this landmark legislation, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world in which all women had the right to vote in parliamentary elections. -

1897-1898 second constitutional convention
Held in stages. First met in Adelaide Marcy 1897, secondly in Sydney in August 1897 and thirldy in Melbourne in sweltering heat of January 1898. By this time New Zealand had lost interest in federating with the Australian colonies and was not represented. In QLd the parliament had not passed necessary legislation so the northern colony was not represented. -
First Referendum
June 1898 referendums held in NSW, Victoria, South Australia nad Tasmania. Australia was the first nation to take a proposed constitution to the people for approval. -

Second referendum
A sereis of referendums were held again in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania with the result that all four colonies agree to the proposed constitution. WA still refused to take part. -
