Congress
This is when the Congress set up three departments and two offices in the executive branch. George Washington was in charge of choosing people to fill spots for these offices and departments. -
Hamilton's Plan
Hamilton was asked to make a plan so the government would have a way to borrow money for itself and economy. Hamilton proposed that the federal government should pay off the wartime debt the state owed. He thought this should be done because paying off the debt would show that they are responsible and will pay back the money they borrow in the future. It would make it a lot easier to borrow money. -
Benjamin Franklin's Death
Franklin was born in Boston in 1706. Benjamin Franklin was one of the many important people. Franklin was a scientist, author, publisher, and many more things. He served in the Second Continental Congress in the American Resolution. He also helped draft the Declaration of Independence. Sadly Franklin died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the age of 84 from attacks of pleurisy. -
DC becomes the capital
Washington DC became the capital of the United States to do with slavery. The idea was to calm down and prove to the people that a Northern Pro Slavery state would work as a capital. Madison, Jefferson, and Washington were also looking for the capital to be closer to their home. The Philidephians were not too happy about it tho and decided to try and bribe President Adams. He was offered a Mansion to stay in. -
Whiskey Rebellion
Congress passed a law that there should be tax on the sale of whiskey. Since whiskey is made of grains it especially made the farmers upset. The upsetting of the farmers eventually turned into violence in July of 1794. There was then a protest called the Whiskey Rebellion that as it started to grow worried the government. Eventually Washington sent troops to fight back with this protest. -
Bill of Rights
At the first session of Congress James Madison introduced a set of amendments. After hearing these amendments the Congress agreed to pass 12 of them. 10 out of the 12 amendments were ratified and these 10 together make up the Bill of Rights. -
XYZ Affair
During this time lots of places were not happy with France.The French started to attack American ships that had cargo to go to the British. After the French attacked President Adams sent a team to try and fix the problems.The French were not having it; they ended up not meeting with the team that was sent. Instead they sent agents over to America. These agents were sent to demand a bribe and loan. President Adams then found out about this and told Congress to prepare for war. -
Alien and Sedition Acts
When the Europeans first came to the United States in the 1790´s they supported the French Revolution. When the Americans found out some of them started to wonder if the Europeans would remain loyal to the United States if they went to war with France. This led the Federalists to pass the Alien and Sedition Act. This act meant that the president had the right to imprison any of these aliens or even deport them if they sought out as dangerous. -
George Washington's Death
George Washington was the first president in the United States who was elected in 1789. Washington was not only the president but was also the leader of the Continental Army. George served two terms as our president and decided not to serve a third. Washington died at Mount Vernon, VA at the age of 67. He passed away from Acute laryngitis. His face can be seen as one of the people a part of Mount Rushmore in Keystone, SD. -
Treaty of Mortefontaine
This was a treaty that was signed by the United States and France. After this was signed it was declared that the war was over. This led to the current president at the time, John Adams, being the first president to live in the Executive Mansion.
